Tests Performed
  • Descriptive Statistics (M, SD, Min, Max, Skewness, Kurtosis)
  • Normality assessment via skewness and kurtosis

The variables were measured on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 to 5. Descriptive statistics were computed for all four study variables. IQ_Mean recorded the highest mean score (M = 3.63, SD = 0.70), followed by LS_Mean (M = 3.57, SD = 0.73), TU_Mean (M = 3.48, SD = 0.74), and PI_Mean (M = 3.23, SD = 0.76). Applying the thresholds appropriate for a 5-point scale (Low: 1.00–2.33; Moderate: 2.34–3.66; High: 3.67–5.00), all four variables fell within the moderate range, indicating a generally mid-level tendency across respondents. PI_Mean returned the lowest mean of the four variables.

An examination of skewness and kurtosis values indicated that the data approximated a normal distribution. Skewness values ranged from -0.305 (LS_Mean) to 0.027 (PI_Mean), and kurtosis values ranged from -0.615 (PI_Mean) to -0.009 (IQ_Mean). All skewness values fell within the acceptable threshold of |Skew| < 2.0 (Gravetter & Wallnau, 2014), and all kurtosis values fell within the acceptable threshold of |Kurt| < 7.0 (Byrne, 2010), supporting the assumption of normality for subsequent analyses.

(Cronbach's α)
(Corrected Item-Total Correlation)

Tests Performed
  • Cronbach's Alpha reliability analysis
  • Item-total correlation analysis
  • Alpha-if-item-deleted analysis

A reliability analysis was conducted to evaluate the internal consistency of all measurement scales prior to hypothesis testing. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were interpreted using the threshold criteria outlined by George and Mallery (2003), whereby values of .90 and above indicate excellent reliability, .80–.89 indicate good reliability, .70–.79 indicate acceptable reliability, and values below .70 warrant increasing caution in interpretation.

The LS scale (5 items) yielded a Cronbach's alpha of .868, indicating good internal consistency. The IQ scale (5 items) produced a Cronbach's alpha of .860, also reflecting good reliability. The TU scale (5 items) demonstrated good internal consistency with a Cronbach's alpha of .871. The PI scale (4 items) returned a Cronbach's alpha of .820, again indicating good reliability. Collectively, all four scales exceeded the commonly recommended threshold of .70, suggesting that each instrument demonstrated sufficient internal consistency for use in quantitative research purposes.

Item-level diagnostics were examined to further evaluate scale integrity. Corrected item-total correlations for all scales exceeded the recommended minimum threshold of .30 (Field, 2018), indicating that each item was consistently measuring the same underlying construct as its respective scale. Inspection of the Cronbach's alpha-if-item-deleted values revealed that removing any item from any scale would result in a decrease or negligible change in alpha, confirming that all items contributed positively to scale reliability. Specifically, all items demonstrated acceptable item-total correlations across the LS scale (range = .662 to .721), the IQ scale (range = .664 to .698), the TU scale (range = .680 to .723), and the PI scale (range = .632 to .647), and removing any item would not meaningfully improve scale reliability in any case.

(Normal Distribution)
(Normal Distribution)
(Independent Samples t-Test))

(Pallant, 2020; Field, 2018)

Tests Performed
  • Shapiro-Wilk test for normality
  • Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality
  • Levene's test for homogeneity of variance (One-Way ANOVA and independent samples t-test)
  • Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) and Tolerance checks for multicollinearity
  • Durbin-Watson test for independence of residuals
  • Standardized residual inspection for outlier detection

Prior to conducting the primary analyses, a series of assumption tests were performed at a significance level of α = .05 to determine the appropriateness of parametric statistical procedures. Normality was assessed for all four study variables using both the Shapiro-Wilk and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Results indicated statistically significant departures from normality across all variables: LS_Mean (W = .982, p < .001; D = .089, p < .001), IQ_Mean (W = .983, p < .001; D = .075, p < .001), TU_Mean (W = .986, p = .001; D = .063, p = .001), and PI_Mean (W = .983, p < .001; D = .067, p < .001). Although these formal tests yielded significant results, inspection of skewness and kurtosis values revealed that all variables fell within acceptable ranges (skewness: −.305 to .027; kurtosis: −.615 to −.009), indicating only minor deviations from normality. Given the large sample size (N = 400), the Central Limit Theorem supports the assumption that sampling distributions of the means will approximate normality; therefore, parametric analyses were deemed appropriate and no non-parametric alternatives were required (Pallant, 2020; Field, 2018).

Homogeneity of variance was examined using Levene's test. For the One-Way ANOVA, Levene's test indicated that variances were equal across Year groups, F(3, 396) = 0.623, p = .601, satisfying this assumption. Similarly, for the independent samples t-test comparing LS_Mean by Gender, Levene's test confirmed homogeneity of variance, F(1, 396) = 0.310, p = .578. Both results supported the use of standard parametric procedures without correction.

For the multiple regression model, additional diagnostic assumptions were evaluated. Independence of residuals was assessed using the Durbin-Watson statistic, which yielded a value of 1.979, falling within the acceptable range of 1.5 to 2.5 and indicating no evidence of autocorrelation among residuals. Multicollinearity was examined using Tolerance and Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) values for each predictor. All VIF values were well below the threshold of 5.0, and all Tolerance values exceeded 0.20, indicating no multicollinearity concerns in the model. Finally, outliers were assessed through inspection of standardized residuals. The maximum absolute standardized residual was 3.024, which marginally exceeds the ±3.29 threshold used to identify extreme outliers; however, as only a single case approached this boundary and did not surpass it, no cases were deemed problematic. Cook's Distance values were not available in the output and could not be formally evaluated. Overall, the regression assumptions were considered sufficiently satisfied to proceed with parametric analysis.

H1

To test whether LS_Mean differed between Gender groups 1 and 2, an independent samples t-test was conducted. Prior to the analysis, Gender group 3 (n = 2) was excluded per syntax specification, yielding an analysis N of 398. Levene's test for equality of variances was non-significant, F(1, 396) = 0.31, p = .578, so equal variances were assumed. The t-test revealed a statistically significant difference in LS_Mean between the two groups, t(396) = −3.703, p < .001, 95% CI [−0.41, −0.13]. Gender 2 (M = 3.69, SD = 0.71) scored significantly higher than Gender 1 (M = 3.42, SD = 0.74). The mean difference was −0.27. Cohen's d = 0.37, indicating a small effect size (Cohen, 1988). H1 was supported.

H2

To test whether IQ_Mean and PI_Mean differed from one another within the same participants, a paired samples t-test was conducted (N = 400). This was a within-subject comparison of two constructs in a cross-sectional dataset, not a pre/post design. The paired correlation between IQ_Mean and PI_Mean was significant, r(398) = .177, p < .001. The test revealed that IQ_Mean (M = 3.63, SD = 0.70) was significantly higher than PI_Mean (M = 3.23, SD = 0.76), t(399) = 8.670, p < .001, 95% CI [0.32, 0.50], with a mean difference of 0.41 (SD of difference = 0.94, SE = 0.05). Cohen's dz = 0.43, indicating a small effect size (Cohen, 1988). H2 was supported.

H3

To test whether LS_Mean differed across Year of study groups, a one-way ANOVA was conducted (N = 400). Levene's test confirmed homogeneity of variance, F(3, 396) = 0.623, p = .601. The ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference in LS_Mean across year groups, F(3, 396) = 3.006, p = .030, η² = .022, indicating a small effect size (Cohen, 1988). Descriptive statistics for each group are presented in Table 2.

Tukey HSD post-hoc comparisons were conducted to identify which specific groups differed. Only the comparison between Year 1 and Year 2 reached statistical significance (mean difference = −0.27, SE = 0.10, p = .046). All remaining pairwise comparisons were non-significant, with all p ≥ .077. Full post-hoc results are presented in Table 3. H3 was supported.

LS_Mean was significantly positively correlated with IQ_Mean, r(398) = .479, p < .001, TU_Mean, r(398) = .390, p < .001, and PI_Mean, r(398) = .243, p < .001. The correlation between LS_Mean and IQ_Mean represents a medium effect size (Cohen, 1988). The correlation between LS_Mean and TU_Mean represents a medium effect size (Cohen, 1988). The correlation between LS_Mean and PI_Mean represents a small effect size (Cohen, 1988). IQ_Mean was significantly positively correlated with TU_Mean, r(398) = .260, p < .001, representing a small effect size, and with PI_Mean, r(398) = .177, p < .001, also representing a small effect size (Cohen, 1988). The correlation between TU_Mean and PI_Mean was not significant, r(398) = .066, p = .185. StudyHours was not significantly correlated with any variable: LS_Mean, r(398) = .044, p = .375; IQ_Mean, r(398) = −.010, p = .835; TU_Mean, r(398) = −.005, p = .922; PI_Mean, r(398) = .003, p = .957. All correlations involving StudyHours were negligible in magnitude (Cohen, 1988).

Because StudyHours was not significantly correlated with any of the four scale variables and the TU_Mean–PI_Mean correlation was also non-significant, H4 was partially supported.

H5

To test whether IQ_Mean significantly predicted LS_Mean, a simple linear regression was conducted (N = 400). The overall model was statistically significant, F(1, 398) = 118.343, p < .001, R = .479, R² = .229, adjusted R² = .227, indicating that IQ_Mean accounted for 22.9% of the variance in LS_Mean. The effect size was f² = 0.297, indicating a medium effect (Cohen, 1988). IQ_Mean was a significant positive predictor of LS_Mean, B = 0.50, SE = 0.05, β = .479, t(398) = 10.879, p < .001. A one-unit increase in IQ_Mean was associated with a 0.50-unit increase in LS_Mean. H5 was supported.

H6

To test whether IQ_Mean, TU_Mean, PI_Mean, and StudyHours jointly and individually predicted LS_Mean, a multiple linear regression was conducted (N = 400). The overall model was statistically significant, F(4, 395) = 48.878, p < .001, R = .575, R² = .331, adjusted R² = .324, indicating that the four predictors jointly accounted for 33.1% of the variance in LS_Mean. The effect size was f² = 0.495, indicating a large effect (Cohen, 1988).

Three of the four predictors were statistically significant. IQ_Mean was a significant positive predictor, B = 0.39, SE = 0.05, β = .378, t(395) = 8.752, p < .001, such that a one-unit increase in IQ_Mean was associated with a 0.39-unit increase in LS_Mean. TU_Mean was also a significant positive predictor, B = 0.28, SE = 0.04, β = .281, t(395) = 6.594, p < .001, such that a one-unit increase in TU_Mean was associated with a 0.28-unit increase in LS_Mean. PI_Mean was a significant positive predictor, B = 0.15, SE = 0.04, β = .157, t(395) = 3.762, p < .001, such that a one-unit increase in PI_Mean was associated with a 0.15-unit increase in LS_Mean. StudyHours was not a significant predictor, B = 0.01, SE = 0.01, β = .049, t(395) = 1.199, p = .231. Comparing standardized coefficients, IQ_Mean (β = .378) was the strongest predictor, followed by TU_Mean (β = .281) and PI_Mean (β = .157). Full regression coefficients are presented in Table 6.

Multicollinearity diagnostics indicated no concerns: the largest VIF was 1.103 and the smallest Tolerance was .907, both well within acceptable limits. The Durbin-Watson statistic was 1.979, indicating that the independence of residuals assumption was satisfied. Because StudyHours did not reach significance, H6 was partially supported.

H7

To test whether an association existed between Gender and DeviceType, a chi-square test of independence was conducted (N = 400). The test revealed a statistically significant association, χ²(6, N = 400) = 25.854, p < .001. Cramér's V = .180 (df_min = 2), indicating a small effect size (Cohen, 1988). H7 was supported.

⚠️ Assumption Violation: 4 cells (33.3%) had expected counts below 5, with a minimum expected count of 0.11. This is a SEVERE violation of the chi-square assumption of adequate expected cell frequencies. The violation was driven primarily by the very small Gender 3 group (n = 2), which produced expected counts as low as 0.10 across DeviceType categories. These results should be interpreted with explicit caution. Consider: (a) combining sparse Gender categories and re-running the analysis, (b) excluding the Gender 3 group and re-running on the 2 × 4 table for Gender 1 and Gender 2 only, or (c) reporting the current result with a clear caveat about its reliability given the assumption violation.

H8

To test whether TU_Mean mediated the relationship between IQ_Mean and LS_Mean, a mediation analysis was conducted using PROCESS Model 4 (Hayes, 2022) with 5,000 bootstrap samples and 95% bias-corrected confidence intervals (N = 400). The a-path, representing the effect of IQ_Mean on TU_Mean, was significant, B = 0.27, SE = 0.05, t(398) = 5.377, p < .001, 95% CI [0.17, 0.38]. The b-path, representing the effect of TU_Mean on LS_Mean controlling for IQ_Mean, was also significant, B = 0.28, SE = 0.04, t(398) = 6.562, p < .001, 95% CI [0.20, 0.36].

The indirect effect of IQ_Mean on LS_Mean through TU_Mean was significant, B = 0.08, BootSE = 0.02, 95% Boot CI [0.04, 0.11], as the confidence interval excluded zero. The completely standardized indirect effect was .074. The direct effect of IQ_Mean on LS_Mean, after controlling for TU_Mean, remained significant, B = 0.42, SE = 0.05, t(398) = 9.337, p < .001, 95% CI [0.33, 0.51]. The total effect of IQ_Mean on LS_Mean was B = 0.50, SE = 0.05, t(398) = 10.879, p < .001, 95% CI [0.41, 0.59]. Because the indirect effect was significant and the direct effect remained significant after including TU_Mean as a mediator, the pattern is consistent with partial mediation. H8 was supported.

H9

To test whether StudyHours moderated the relationship between IQ_Mean and LS_Mean, a moderation analysis was conducted using PROCESS Model 1 (Hayes, 2022), with IQ_Mean and StudyHours mean-centered prior to analysis (N = 400). The interaction term between IQ_Mean and StudyHours was not statistically significant, B = 0.00, SE = 0.01, t(396) = 0.020, p = .984, 95% CI [−0.03, 0.03], ΔR² = .000, F(1, 396) = 0.0004, p = .984. The ΔR² of .000 indicates a negligible change in variance explained attributable to the interaction. Because the interaction term was non-significant, no conditional effects at low (−1 SD), mean, or high (+1 SD) values of StudyHours were interpretable, and no Johnson-Neyman regions of significance were applicable. StudyHours did not moderate the effect of IQ_Mean on LS_Mean. H9 was not supported.
